Don't worry if there are gaps we will fill them in the lesson also. We're getting to the end of our third and last film and it's important we start drawing comparisons from the three. Begin by filling in the following comparison chart before you forget everything over half term .

Homeworks this half term, due every Wednesday by:

8th September - background research into Rebel, James Dean and the US in the 50s a paragraph on each section to set the film.

Looking specifically at key scenes in their homes, planetarium scenes, mansion and the race. Also look up quotes on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048545/quotes to help back up your points.
29th September - complete the key scene analysis sheet attached at the top for Rebel Without a Cause using your Distinct notes to help you. Typed up and completed please!
5th October - slides finished, powerpoint presentations merged and ready on to one file, I will then upload them on to this blog. Ten minute presentations on 6th October.
12th October - research into La Haine - research who the main characters are and anything about them, the setting, themes and narratives so that you are prepared for next week.
19th October - character analysis and Distinct sheets complete

Good morning everyone
You are going to be assigned a Breakfast Club character in the next couple of weeks and you will be working on some group presentations, look through the links I've attached at the top. You will be creating a character analysis like the one for Jim.

Now that we've seen the whole film we can add some more thoughts to our character diagrams. Looking over your DISTINCT notes could you please design a similar chart with sections summarising settings, themes, icons and narrative. Make it as comprehensive as possible with photos from the film so that when you're writing your essay in a month's time it will help you remember the film well. On Thursday we'll summarise Rebel and begin with Breakfast Club.

In the computer room lesson today please use your homework to make a spider diagram with pictures of the actual characters describing their personalities, a general description of what we the audience think of them, what the character says (quotes and expressions). what the character does (actions in the film), what others think of them (who and why). Look through the quotes and find appropriate ones to support your ideas. We will update these when we finish the film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048545/quotes

AUTUMN 2010
Hi everyone I hope you've all had a great break.

We are now starting our first piece of written coursework - this will revolve around the representation of teenagers, their relationships with each other and with adults over four decades through the films Rebel Without A Cause, Breakfast Club and La Haine. Thank you for your first drafts of posters and dvd covers. We'll make sure you tidy those up in order to push up your final coursework grade. Again, remember these will be marked alongside your first coursework essay. We will starting with our first film this week so please do some background research into James Dean, the film itself and the US in the 50s.

  • In the computer room lessons (we have two a fortnight now) we will be finishing the dvd/posters and typing up the teen movie evaluation:
  • Could you also please design a worksheet for Rebel Without A Cause 1955 as a heading, with scenes 1, 2, 3 etc down the left hand side with the headings Narrative, Setting, Themes, Icons, Characters, Textual Analysis. Make it landscape and print out a few copies. Make sure you leave enough room between scenes as the narrative and character descriptions can take up quite a lot of space.

SUMMER 2010
New assignment everybody - I would like you to choose a one minute clip of your choice, from any film in your collection to present to class. You can devise a powerpoint or a word document your choice. Do not panic. Sometimes there is not much to say about one aspect of the clip (like editing) but choose a film you're familiar with. If you can't find one, I've got a drawer full ask myself or Miss Bond of up to a minute in length and write up an analysis on the use of camera and mise en scene, higlighting specific shots you would like to discuss and how they all combine to create meaning in an action adventure film. We will then watch this clip in class. Any volunteers to present tomorrow? The rest of the presentations will take place next Tuesday.

We will be studying teenage films and in our computer room sessions we will be carrying out a production task. This will involve researching past teenage films, your target audience by designing a questionnaire, developing a pitch for a film and then a marketing strategy (film poster) and a cover for when it comes out on dvd. The film poster will be A4 size and the dvd template I will upload here. First, make sure that you have created a media folder in My Documents in order to keep all your work. All homeworks should be kept here and if you're working at home make sure you email them to yourselves and keep them on a memory stick.

So first the research:external image msword.pngsave this document as teenage representations in your media folder.

1) Use this document to compile a list of about twenty teen films and try and devise the characteristics that are similar or distinguish them from each other. From this list we'll be able to see what the genre conventions are in order to apply them to your own film. Google teen films and look through a selection of respectable sites as well as personal ones to compile an interesting list. You can check on imdb.com for details of each of these films as well as trailers and their websites. Open and save this file to your documents and then fill in the columns. Genre of Teenage films.doc
2) When you have finished the list can you establish any common, recurring themes, character stereotypes and settings? Write 200 words on this with the title Conventions of Teenage films.
3) You need to devise a questionnaire. As most teenage films target teenagers, you need to get to know your audience, a good start is the information gathered from your classmates' questionnaires. Devise your own questionnaire and ask a variety of at least ten of your target audience 13-18 both genders, what they look for in a film, how often they go etc. About ten questions that will help you devise a succesful storyline. Teen films
Then the planning:
First read this guide to what makes a great teen film and try to incorporate this into your idea:
teen flicks
4) Fill in worksheet make my film external image msword.png Make My Film.doc Re-format it if necessary to include all information you will need to pitch your film idea. Ask friends/classmates for advice/feedback and get Miss Brookes to approve it. Once approved you're ready to start designing your dvd cover and poster. Draw a draft of each with ideas of where the actors would go, the blurb, any reviews. Have a look at real dvd covers for inspiration.

You need to become familiar with Fireworks as it's the graphics programme we have available in our computer rooms. It's a slow and sometimes frustrating process but it's necessary for you to practice your graphic skills as this work will be part of your coursework grade.

5) Google dvd cover - choose one that has a spine front and back and save into My Pictures. Open Fireworks in All Programs/Core Programs/Fireworks, in Fireworks go to File - new - and size is 21.5 height and 28.9 width for dvd cover (A4 landscape) - other way around for poster size (A4 portrait). Then go to file import and find your dvd cover template. Double click, it may come in another size so just click on the corners and shrink it.

Producing your film and dvd covers. Firstly, have a look at these

1) Open Macromedia Fireworks in start-all programmes-Macromedia (canvas size 8” by 11” or 11” by 8” for the dvd cover)
2) You can use found images from the internet. Think carefully about style of font, size etc. Make sure you include conventions of a poster e.g. title, main actors, film studio, age certificate, tagline, reviews/ratings etc

Do not to worry too much if you find using Fireworks difficult – it’s a good opportunity to practise before coursework. Don’t be afraid to ask other students for help if you get stuck!

When you finish your poster and dvd cover you should write an analysis of it in Microsoft Word explaining
